Silkstone Common Methodist Church

The Primitive Methodist Chapel at Silkstone Common was opened in September 1886. The building at the west end of the village is now a private dwelling. In August 1931 the present Chapel and Schoolroom were opened in the centre of the village.

The Methodist Church in Silkstone Common is now one of the churches in the Barnsley Circuit of Methodism. Services are held each Sunday at 10.30am, with an additional service on the first Sunday of the month at 4.00pm. Services are also held on a monthly basis in the neighbouring Bloomfield Residential Home. There is a thriving Sunday School held on Sunday mornings at 10.30am and a weekly fellowship meeting at 2.30pm on Monday afternoons.

Facilities within the premises have been updated in recent years to meet with the demands of our modern society. There is full disabled access to all parts of the premises, with a disabled toilet. The Church is equipped with an audio system including an induction loop for the hard of hearing. There is also a modern kitchen and a new toilet block.

In the absence of a village hall in Silkstone Common, the premises are extensively used by outside groups, including the Silkstone Ladies' Choir, the Silkstone Common Luncheon Club, the Silkstone Common Good Companions, the Silkstone Common Womens Institute and classes of Barnsley College. The Schoolroom is frequently used for private children's parties.

To celebrate the Millennium the Church organised a Gift Day and invited villagers and members to contribute towards a village clock to be placed outside the Church. AT a cost of £1,900 the clock was installed and dedicated in December 1999.

For pastoral matters, including baptisms, weddings and funerals contact Minister, Rev Gill M Newton BA. For use of the premises contact the Property Steward, Keith Jowett, 01226 790461.
